The third season of this great podcast has started with the story of a small regional high school with a literal Egyptian mummy head in the library. For over a hundred years this severed mummified head has been a part of going to school at Grafton High School in New South Wales, but nobody actually knows where it came from or why. And yes, spoiler alert, it is a genuine Egyptian mummy, dated to the Greco-Roman period.

Previous episodes of the show have featured the Elgin Marbles, the Benin Bronzes, the Motunui Epa from New Zealand, and the Pekingese dog - one specimen of which was taken from the Beijing Summer Palace and gifted to Queen Victoria, who named it "Looty".

Definitely worth a listen.

Ooh, didn't see the new season yet! (I am working down a multi-thousand episode backlog over all my pods)

It is a really good one.

I can also recommend a tangentially related other pod, Museum of Lost Objects by the BBC. It is now defunct, but while it ran it traced the histories of now destroyed antiquities and landmarks.

Many years ago I listened to the History of the World in 100 Objects podcast, which was excellent. Much later the actual exhibition toured and I got to see the 100 objects for myself.

On the list of what the British (and the Americans and many others) stole, don't forget to include people.

Indeed. That hasn't been covered in this particular podcast at this stage, because it is focused on physical artifacts. Slavery is outside its scope.

Now now, at least a couple of those items were British to start off with...

though they did cover this a bit with the Akan Drum, a West African drum from the 1700s, but found in Virginia and bought as part of a collection initially mislabelled as being made by Native Americans.  It was an item that could be used as a reminder about all three continents involvement in the slave trade.

Yes, but the show isn't about the slave trade, it's about artifacts stolen to put in museums.

Daniel, you will be pleased to note that the 5th July episode (Bottles In The Basement takes on the British slave trade directly, through the introduction of the oldest bottles of rum in the world, found in the sub-basement of a British stately house that turns out was 100% built on the proceeds of the Barbadian rum trade, grown and manufactured by African slaves.

Thanks. Good that they're acknowledging that the worst theft was the slave trade itself.

If you'd like a great pod about the British slave trade, there is Human Resources (not to be confused with the not that great Hardcore History episode).

Thanks, but I prefer not to be reminded, yet again, of how vile the human race is. Slavery is a massively shameful and depressing fact of human history and current affairs. I don't need to be reminded of how barbarically cruel human beings are to one another.
