Almost all of the world experienced one of the warmest October months ever, except us.

I would not have guessed that. Ever since the start of October it's been nothing but rain and very hard wind over here and it's very uncomfortable to rest as I get chilled to the bone almost right away.

A long overdue moment? The UK greens pushing for the nuclear option

Growing numbers of environmentalists in northern Europe are embracing technology to combat the climate crisis, but in Britain 'ecomodernist' ideas have had a so-far frosty reception

On 21 May 2022, after hours of impassioned debate, members of Finland's Green party voted to make theirs the first in the world to back nuclear power. Greens in Finland would now campaign not only for the lifespan of current reactors to be extended but also for new plants, with the technology recognised by their manifesto as "sustainable energy".

It was a decision that upended decades of environmentalist orthodoxy – by campaigners who, in many cases, cut their teeth in opposition to nuclear. And, for Tea Törmänen, it was the culmination of years of campaigning.

She and others in the Finnish Greens for Science and Technology group had argued that only through the adoption of nuclear power and other technologies could human societies decarbonise fast enough to avert climate breakdown. Writing later, the biologist, who is also a former chair of Finland's Ecomodernist Society, said: "For me it was a moment that was long overdue."

Finland is the "gold standard" of what RePlanet hopes to achieve. Not only have ecomodernists there managed to persuade the Green party to adopt nuclear power, but in December the party's council agreed to a dismantling of restrictions on GM. With 20 seats in Finland's parliament, such policy decisions have force.

Over here, one of the newly elected leaders of the Green Party (they have a system with two party leaders, one male and one female) declared that the Green Party, who is currently part of the political opposition, will never be part of a government that wants to build new nuclear power plants.

Finland is clearly our more rational sibling-country.

Yeah, our Greens are relentlessly oppposed to nuclear energy too. And GMOs. I vote for them because I like all their other progressive policies, but on these two issues I disagree with them.

A lot of NIMBYs in the Greens Party

True, a lot of the opposition to hydro is remnant of the Franklin-Gordon system which was the Greens' birthplace. And to be fair, hydro (as opposed to pumped hydro which is grid storage) is pretty destructive to the land you flood with dams. A whole town is now underwater in Lake Jindabyne because of the original Snowy scheme. It's understandable that they would be concerned about the flooding of pristine native forest.

Wind? Yeah, opposition to wind is pretty irrational. NIMBYs to be sure.
