I was having lower back issues and the Dr. said my old and mushy mattress might be forming a hammock (his word) which meant that my vertebrae were getting uneven pressure all night long.
Switching to a firmer, more supportive mattress fixed 90% of the issue. I still have minor flareups if I'm doing repetitive actions like bending over to pick things up or digging with a shovel. But those were a lot worse before I changed mattresses.
