Recipes / Re: Easy potato egg scramble

Normally when people put 'easy' on a recipe it involves extra steps that I truly cant be arsed with but this looks great! I cant wait to try it!

Daniel, I dont know off hand if we have a recipe thread but you should post more of these types of things!

Had an interesting conversation with a friend yesterday.
We both know multiple people who tried to get into medical school but had law as their second choice.
Or vice versa.

Neither of us know anyone who applied for either course and took nursing or legal secretary as their second choices.

I also do not know anyone from a wealthy background who does, for example, council work (sewage, waste disposal, road works etc).
We seem to have a rising floor for the children of people in certain social classes (which Im assured do not exist outside the UK or other monarchistic countries) which implies to me that most of the countries I am aware of, are not actual meritocracies (shocking, I know.)

Anyone wanting to claim that they live in an equal and fair society would need to show me an equal distribution of rich kids across menial jobs and trades (carpentry, electrician, plumber etc) or I would call bullshit.
If anyone knows of a country that does have such a distribution, I would be grateful so I can have a look and see what policies to recommend to my local representatives.

I do think we are doomed. I dont think my suggestions would yield results in time to save us.
I just dont think I have seen acceptable alternatives.

Quote from: gmalivuk on February 12, 2024, 04:58:15 PMThat may be a place where Rai and I go farther than Harry. Whatever (good and important) internal things a country does to improve the lives of its own citizens and residents, numerous global issues with the current system remain and are incompatible with continued human civilization.

But of course you've barely ever acknowledged our arguments, let alone engaged honestly with any of them.
I dont think I ultimately disagree with you.
But I think specific democratic changes are how we get there. If we can remove the things that create the most inequality and allow for money to count as extra votes when lobbying, I think society in general would be less flooded with misinformation and people would be better educated.
The we could start making informed decisions as a society and move towards more humane and sustainable systems of living.

Without removing those barriers, nothing is going to happen because even successful revolution is a disaster in the aftermath.

Would be nice to discuss/debate this a bit from the shared view that the current system is unacceptable.

Quote from: Harry Black on February 12, 2024, 01:23:29 PMThe nordic model is about as good as it gets under capitalism.

But show me something that addresses the things I have actually voiced in this thread and I dont care what you call it, I will support it.
I am not aware of any nordic country that does so though.

That it why I wrote fairly or somewhat close to it. But then from your post it seems to be the case that you would like some left-wing economic reforms rather than a wholesale change of the economic system. Is that correct?
You could describe it as that.

What you see in capitalist countries of all sorts is capital trying to influence policy to reduce costs and maximise profits.
I want a system whereby this is impossible in a meaningful way. It will always be a priority of business and I support people being able to own small businesses but no entity should grow to a point that it can influence policy or undermine labour.

Co-ops exist but I want to see worker ownership in businesses over a certain size, nationalisation for essential things like housing, health, education, transport, energy, legal services etc.
I also want generational wealth to cease to exist.

I think a society like that could look VERY similar to what we have now.
Quote from: Tassie Dave on February 12, 2024, 02:41:44 AMSteve mentioned that George Hrab wouldn't be at their eclipse party because he is doing something with Brian Brushwood (friend of the show).

George Hrab will be performing the entirety of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" culminating with the last chords of the final track "Eclipse" as the eclipse is starting.

This will be happening at "The 7 acre Schwood", Brian's podcast studio property in Austin which is under the eclipse path of Totality.

Unrelated note. I was several minutes into Steve's item before I realised he wasn't saying "Wellness Influenzas"  :undecided:

Aussie accent confusion goes both ways??

You keep saying the points I raised are not what we are talking about. They are exactly what we (your interlocutors) have been talking about.

These are the kinds of changes and protections we want. Simply to protect society from the drive to increase profits above other goals and to reduce inequality by giving everyone a more even starting point in life.

Tell me, how exactly is it incompatible with reduction of poverty, to stop private interests being able to exert influence on government policy?

What part of having individuals with the wealth of nations is essential to reducing world hunger and homelessness?

What is it about the existence of shareholders that does more good in the world than if those same companies were co-ops?

Why would it be worse if public schools were the only option and no one had to pay for them? Likewise healthcare?

Why would nationalised banks be worse than private financial interests?

We are not talking about doing away with democracy. We are not talking about recreating soviet style communism.

All you are doing is showing what DID happen in a world economy as it played out, with all the conflict and interference that did happen. And against the existence of regimes that no one here endorses.
The data you are using is absolutely useless because there is no control group to compare it to whereby the things we are talking about have been stopped or implemented.
-The system we have is the best system because the system we have has led us to where we are.-
Thats idiotic. Horse traders probably made similar arguments against the proliferation of motor vehicles. Especially when early models were so poor.
My friends have a nice little liberal bubble going but the traffic looks traumatising so I have put it off. Ive always wanted to see Texas though so...we shall see!
Ive a very good friend in Houston that I keep threatening to visit.
Well the idea that drugs could be legal is a pretty new introduction to the life of a guy like Joe. He has taken illegal substances for his entire life and never suffered consequences. As a very wealth white guy, he is even less likely to suffer consequences in a place like Texas.

Trade that off with his preference as a rich guy to pay less tax and have less regulation on what he can do with his home and the chance to live in a culture that is more accepting of his conservative and reactionary values than LA.
Seems like a no brainer.
Rogan is a great example of the JAQ off layman who has way too much confidence.

But if thats all it was, you would expect an even spread of ideas and preferences but he is clearly leaning so far right he is in danger of falling over. Stupid people are everywhere but so many end up embracing hate and harmful ideas because of it.
I think a lot of it comes from the outrage at being told that some of their attitudes and past actions may have been wrong. So they run wounded to the arms of people telling them they are just fine as the overconfident debatey alpha bros they worked so hard to become.

And the snowflakes buy it.
Havent been able to run for months due to an injury. Wanted to try rest and then stretching before I sought help.

Then it took me a good while to find a good science based physio.

One session though and Ive had a big improvement. Ive been given exercises to do though which are a pain in the piriformis and take about 20min a day.

I referred to ah.hell as 'they'.

Surely you know the names of people who regularly post here?

Im not arsed clicking your link until you engage with mine but i dont dispute the stats on poverty as they have been gathered and presented.

They are just fucking irrelevent to the discussion.
